One of the major problems with the standard so called green energy production systems is that they generally are able to produce a lot of power at the time when household usage is at a minimum. Many systems cope with this by selling the spare power back to the energy suppliers by the national grid but others are based on a free usage of power on condition that the roof is rented so that any excess power is sent via the national grid and the benefit is gained by the owner of the solar panels fitted on the roof. One way that a better advantage can be obtained by the house holder is to store the energy by heating water that can be stored and used at a later time. The unvented undersink larger heater or cylinder is an ideal way of using some of the excess power generated. This is particularly useful where the central heating boiler has only a small hot water capacity and generates the hot water on demand.
The typical stainless cylinder can have capacities of 90 to 300 litres of hot water and these can also be ganged together to give an even larger reservoir of hot water. The system similar to the Hyco undersink heater are either direct or indirect heated and fits in with both types of solar panels, either electricity producing or hot water producing. In the case of the direct heating system the electricity producing panels will provide power to the immersion heater during the day and produce plenty of warm water for use overnight. The insulation on these units is very good and will keep the water hot enough for use in the evening and even the following day although the system can allow for secondary heating during the night.
This system is even better suited to the water heating solar panels when hot water from the roof panels is used to heat the undersink cylinder by means of the indirect coil. This is a fast method of heat transfer and will replace hot water used in the day quickly and efficiently. Large families can really take advantage of the extra water used for showers and baths by installing more than one undersink heater and then ganging them together. In this case it would allow one tank to be used early and one later in the evening or the following morning. The pipework and controls would be a little more complicated but quite possible.
