Who came in with John yesterday?

One of the undocumented reasons for insomnia is the security (or the lack of it) at your business establishment. With the kind of crime levels that we see today, it makes a lot of sense to invest properly in good security systems to ensure that we are fully aware of the movement of people in our business establishment.

One of the most important and sure shot ways to ensure that there is no uninvited guests in our shops and establishes is to install a good CCTV camera system. For those of us who may be not be up-to-date with this technology, let me explain what this system is all about. CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television camera. It is a security system that can monitor all the critical physical locations in your business or campus and capture the movements. One can use it to watch the movement remotely in real time or they can choose to record all the movements in a computer system to be reviewed and audited later on or whenever there is an incidence reported.

The CCTV camera system is very useful in various circumstances. For instance, you can monitor the various stalls and counters from a single place. This will help you prevent as well as catch shop lifters.  You can also monitor and record the movements in the shop when the shop is closed. Some advanced system might also send out alerts and alarms when there is a movement spotted in a place at a time when it should not.   There are indeed various scenarios where CCTV camera based security is often desired and sometimes even required.

In addition to such monitoring, one might also consider installing access cards based security as well. Access cards are of various types such as magnetic or RF based. These cards are encoded with special information about the access rights the possessor of the card has. When such a card is swiped in the card machine near the door, the device either opens or refuses access to the person based on their rights.  Combined with CCTV cameras one can easily identify the people who are attempting to gain access to sensitive locations of the office time and again.

The best way to find out right solution to your problem is to consult an Access Control installation expert who generally takes care of electrical maintenance in your area.

So then next time you find it difficult to fall asleep, consult a good security expert rather than call in for a visit to your doctor!

9 software testing tips before you start any testing cycle

Before you are start any testing cycles it is important that you make sure you are aware of these 20 tips testing tips. This will help you to be more efficient in your task.

1- Coverage is very important. It is usually impossible for one person to test at 100% a website but the more you are organize the more efficient you’ll be

2 – Try to divide your testing phase into different modules depending on each functionalities of the website. For example if you are testing a CMS you can thoroughly test each functionalities separately.

3 – When you’ve finished testing the application it is important that you thoroughly analyze your results. For example the application can have a lot of bugs but if you can understand where the problem comes from it will make the debugging process faster.

4 – Always write your test case to help the debuggers:

  • what you did
  • what happened
  • what went wrong
  • what went good

5 – Always send the bugs you spotted to developers so they can start debugging quickly instead of having to do everything at the end.

6 – Test the application for its main purpose but also for purpose it is not supposed to do.

7 – Communicating with developers is also very important. It will help you understand how hard it is to fix a bug, or what is precisely needed to do for each functionality to work properly

8 – Developers shouldn’t be testing their own code. They should be put aside from the test environment. Sometime their computer can be properly configured using a neutral computer will provide better results.

The importance of bug tracking

You have been working on month developing a website for one of your clients. The deadline is almost here and the website should go online shortly. When you have almost finished a project it is very important that you start a bug tracking phase. Usually a project manager should allocate some extra time to check no bugs are on the website before it gets delivered. No one can usually develop a website which doesn’t have any bugs this is why you always have to test it.

It is very important that you check thoroughly all the website to make sure there aren’t any bugs. When a clients pays for a service he will want it to work perfectly (you don’t buy a car knowing it will go down two weeks after). When you sell a product to a client you usually want him to have a good image of your company and the service your offer.

Another important point to underline the importance of bug tracking is security. If you have built a website with a database it is important that you make sure there isn’t any security breach or hackers will be able to collect all the data. This can be very dangerous if the data stored is sensitive (phone number, address, email address).

When you are starting you bug tracking phase it is important that you use a good software testing tool. This tool will help your tester to list all the bugs they have spotted. They will easily explain how each bug occurred for the developers to fix them quickly. Using an online bug tracking tool is very handy because your testers will be able to use it from any computer which as an internet browser. This is will help you gain a lot of time because you don’t have to install the software on every computer.

Some companies are also specialized in bug tracking and testing. You can easily hire one and their team will make a full report of bug they have spotted during their tests.

Tablet PC Computers For Business And Field Operatives

These days you could easily be forgiven for thinking that everyone besides yourself owns a tablet PC, as whenever you go in a coffee shop that has a wi-fi connection, often every customer other than you seems to be using them!

One of the key reasons for this is their ease of use with regards to the Internet and multimedia, be it simply for reading and sending e-mails or checking out your friends latest photos on facebook. Whilst many Smartphone’s offer similar services, the screens even on large Smartphone’s are too small to be used as a full sized keyboard, and they do not give an ideal experience when it comes to viewing pictures and movies.

Also top of the range tablets also offer spreadsheet and word processing programmes.

So whilst they are the hot trend for social use, why should you use one for business?

Well firstly in general they are a lot more rugged than a laptop, they have no keyboard and as such can take being splashed with a drink or two. They tend to have few moving parts with some models only using flash memory, so there is no hard drive to be damaged in the event of a “Bump”. You can even buy fully rugged tablet computers that can be hand held or vehicle mounted.

For field operatives they offer GPS so they can be used to log real time and location data making them ideal for taking meter readings or logging other consumer data.

They also offer email with the ability to convert the touch screen in to a near full size keyboard. When used with a 3G card they also offer the ability to be used for video conferencing. The high quality cameras on most tablets also mean that they can be used for taking photos at a customer’s premises. A good example of this would be their use by insurance assessors who can now use a tablet computer to take photos of damage, write a report and then email them back to head office.

So all of the features that make tablet PC’s great for personal use also make them very effective business machines.

And if you think that equipping your workforce with ipads maybe expensive then there are many other cheaper brands of tablet on the market for a fraction of the cost. Just note that a fully rugged machine will cost more but can provide the ultimate computer for field operative use.

Wireless Networking The All Essential Wireless Network Set Up

These days the majority of laptop, desktop PC’s, tablet computers and smart phones all feature the ability to connect wirelessly over what is known as “Wifi”. Indeed this wireless form of computing is now so popular that around 800 million Wifi enabled devices are sold annually. In addition there are now around 4 million public access Wifi “Hotspots” where you can use a computer or smart phone to log on to the Internet wirelessly, often for free as long as you are buying a drink or eating there (Most hotspots tend to be in bars, coffee shops, hotels or public places such as airports).

Yet whilst many people use a wireless hotspot at some point in a month, the most common place to use a wireless network is at home.

Setting up a secure wireless network at home is now very easy, as all that is required is a modem and a wireless router to create the network. The modem can be a cable modem, or one designed to work with a normal telephone line depending on your local service provider e.g. not everyone has access to cable broadband.

To set up the wireless network the input from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) goes in to your modem and the output from the modem goes in to the wireless router.

To setup a secure network you then need to connect your computer with a cable to the wireless router, just the once, to initially setup the secure wireless network connection. After the initial setup the cable can then be removed and you will be able to use any computer or Wifi enabled smart phone wirelessly with the router without the need to connect with a cable.

The range of the wireless network will vary but should easily cover most households even if you have a lot of solid walls. Indeed the majority of wireless routers will give a strong enough signal to enable you to work outside in your garden.

It is essential that you set up a secure wireless network, as if not other people could download dubious content, which in the event of this being of a serious nature then you could find yourself having to justify that it was not you that downloaded the content. This can be a serious matter so always secure your network.

Most wireless routers are now supplied with idiot proof installation instructions enabling someone with next to no technical knowledge to easily install them.

Tablet Computers – The Replacement For Laptops?

When it comes to portable computing many of us are used to using laptops for work or at home, however they can be very heavy and bulky with the cheaper ones featuring older battery technology meaning that they are not only very heavy, but also do not have a great battery life.

Indeed you could argue a laptop weighing two kilos or more is hardly portable, add in the weight of a laptop bag and a few extras and you can be carrying four or five kilos.

However the latest tablet computers are designed to be light in weight and feature the latest battery technology to offer good battery life as well as keeping the overall weight to a minimum. The latest batteries also offer charging times of around one hour, unlike a laptop, which can take 4-8 hours.

So if you do need computing power “On the move” then why not look at tablet computers instead of laptops? If you are just using your laptop for sending emails and using the Internet then you would be far better off buying one of the new ranges of tablet computers.

They feature large High Definition touch screen displays, which are ideally suited to browsing the Internet. They also come with a wide range of multi-media features making them ideal for watching movies on, which also makes them ideal for using on the train if you commute to work.

When it comes to using them to send emails then the touch screen display can act as a near full size QWERTY keyboard, so you need no separate keyboard.

All of the latest tablet computers all feature Wi-Fi connectivity as a minimum, making them easy to use in any Wi-Fi hotspot. In addition the majority of them can now take a 3G mobile phone card, enabling them to have Internet connectivity allowing you to connect to the Internet without the need to be in a Wi-Fi hotspot.

It is also possible to get tablet computers that can pair with a mobile phone wirelessly, so that the mobile phone acts as its own Wi-Fi hotspot enabling the tablet connect to the Internet anywhere, which is way beyond the functionality a laptop can offer.

Tablet computers being media rich in features are also ideally suited for showing clients sales presentations. In addition you can also get “Light” versions of popular applications such as word, excel and power point to run on them.

Advantages Of Multi-Functional Print Devices

Where as once in many businesses both small and large, there was a tendency to buy a printer for use between every four to six people, this set up now only tends to be found in small businesses where capital cost of computer hardware can be an issue in order to maximise the cash flow.

However, in many large businesses you will find the printer setup is totally different to this and instead one large networked printer will be used by anywhere between 20 to 60 people depending on the overall printing requirements they may have.

This is because rather than using a 10 to 12 sheet per minute basic laser printer a modern office will use a digital copier that is networked into the computer system as a printer instead. This then allows print speeds of anything from 30 to 70 pages per minute. Not only this but as these printers feature all the benefits of a photocopier then the user can selected collated and stapled copies from their desktop PC. This means that they can print out a series of 20 reports without leaving their desk, and not have to waste time standing by the photocopier replicating them.

Not only is this because these modern printers are based on digital photocopier technology rather than conventional laser printer technology the cost per print less than 1p, whereas the cost of a print from a small laser printer is 4-5p. This means that if you are carrying out a high volume of printing then whilst these machines are more expensive to purchase initially, they pay for themselves rapidly due to the lower cost of printing.

Not only that, but also these devices are classed as multi-functional devices as they can also be used as a conventional photocopier as well. They can also act as network scanners enabling very large documents to be scanned in at high speed and stored on the main computer network. This means many users can then access the document online, saving the need to copy the document many times over.

These multi-functional printers often also have a built in fax option, allowing them to be used as a normal fax or a network fax machine as well, thus allowing users to fax to and from their desktop PC.

So as you can when it comes to computer hardware then purchasing a multi-functional printer can be one of the best investments that you can make for your business.

How Industrial LCD Monitors Have Helped Industries Evolve

In many industrial situations and in many businesses the introduction of the Plasma and LCD screens to the residential and retail market did not look like being a problem as they were high price rich peoples toys, however as prices plummeted everyone started buying them, and the death of the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) started with the majority of manufacturers stopping producing them.

This did not initially seem to have much significance that is until CRT screens in mission critical control rooms failed and could not be replaced as nobody was making them anymore. Also many of these critical applications required rugged screens. However there is now a solution for replacing CRT screens with rugged monitors, they can be provided complete with fixings to match the original equipment manufacturers, which means they are a like for like replacement. Which makes life a lot less problematic when it comes to replacing CRT screens in older control rooms.

This brings us on to new build control rooms, many of which simply could not have normal off the shelf LCD monitors fitted as they were required to be used in rugged applications, often varying from rack mounted applications as maybe found in a power station where banks of monitors sit next to, and above each other, through to desktop LCD monitors that need to stand up to the rigours of working in a modern industrial environment.

Other new rugged applications include rugged panel mounted LCD monitors, which are likely to be used in industrial machinery as monitoring panels for CNC machines as an example.

There are now rugged touch screen console monitors which are ideal for placing in desks in control room applications, such as those used in the control rooms of emergency services.

Rugged LCD monitors are the choice of many, as they can be dimmed up or down, they have a wide viewing angle, which is needed as an operator maybe monitoring two screens or even far more at once, they can also stand a cup of coffee being spilt over them, which would otherwise destroy a normal LCD monitor.

So whatever your application you should now be able to find a rugged LCD monitor to fit your needs, be it for use in a new control room, as a stand alone monitor or replacing an older CRT monitor, and if you want one in a custom made size then that too is also possible now.

Military LCD Monitors

When it comes to an industry that can mean taking the word rugged to a whole new level, then you have to be talking about nothing other than Military LCD Monitors, as the demands that can be placed on them are very extreme.

As an example they may be required to be used in a desert control centre situation and exposed to extremes of temperature from well over 100 degrees during the day to well below freezing at night, and they are often exposed to just these temperatures in the current ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, where by they are not always used in air conditioned vehicles, but as computer monitors in field control centres that are merely tents. This leaves the Military LCD Monitors open to these extremes.

They have to be designed not to fail in these conditions as that could well cost lives as they are most often used in command and control situations.

There is also the shock proofing qualities they need as often they may have to move positions in a hurry, and the monitor may not exactly be moved that gently!

Not only that Military LCD Monitors are now used extensively in personnel carriers as well as vehicle based command and control centres, and going back to Afghanistan, the roads these vehicles are being driven along are rough unmade tracks that many of us would not class as a road, so they have to withstand constant jolting around and vibration. Again monitor failure is not an option as loss of command systems or even Military sat nav could cost lives.

Military LCD Monitors also need to emit very low EMI in order that the data on them cannot be intercepted.
They also need to be able to be seen clearly in strong sunlight and yet be able to be dimmed right down so they do not give the users position away to the enemy, this is critical for safety.

They can now be purchased with touch screen options and come in various formats such as portable hand held screens, vehicle mounted LCD monitors, and even LCD head mounted monitors for specialist operations use.
All of these Military LCD Monitors detailed above need to withstand the extreme conditions described above that they may be subject to in a battle zone. There is no room for error as when in a war zone the Military simply cannot walk in to a shop and buy a replacement.
