The Basics Of On Page SEO Part 1

So to kick off my SEO The Basics, I thought it would be best to start with on-site SEO to make sure you know what’s worth taking the time to do and what it will help you with on getting your site ranked higher in the SERP.

I break on-site seo down in the following categories:

  • Link structure
  • Meta date
  • Keywords and Content
  • Landing Pages
  • Each of these all play their own part in SEO and can and will help you to rank if you make sure to do them right in the first place!

    Link Structure:

Link structure is very important to get right from the start as you want google to know which pages are the most important pages. IE your top level pages which are going to be used to be ranked at the top of google for your different selection of keywords.

I find its best to have your top level/category pages linked in the side bar of your site so google can access and crawl these easily to gain access to the rest of your site. There are plenty of ways to do your navigation which I could go on about over a couple of threads so I think it’s best to link you to this article http://sixrevisions.com/user-interface/navigation-design-patterns/ Its most aimed at the design side of things but it’s got some great examples of good navigation and using breadcrumbs so it’s well worth a read!

    Mata Data:

There is a lot of confusion with many people when it comes to know what google actually uses out of all the different meta data fields available. This blog post from google will tell you what is needed, and all the rest are down to personal preference https://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=79812

Google does NOT use the keyword meta tag in rankings! Google have not use the keyword meta tag in its rankings for some time now (sense September 2009). You can read more at this page on the google webmaster blog

Creating the right meta descriptions and page titles are very important as they are not only going to help you rank but should also be used as a selling point to get more people to click your listings on google. Think about it, if your #1 on google but your title and description have nothing to do with the keyword you rank #1 do you think many (if any) people will click your listing!? Have a read of this article on the google support site to see some examples of google meta descriptions and page titles.

Let me know if you like how I have done this post by hitting the thanks button and I will continue with part 2 (Keywords and Content, & Landing Pages) :) If you don’t understand how I have laid out the post please let me know what you would like changed in part two.
