In 1896 the company Zodiac was formed as an aeronautical company when the idea of planes and flying was mainly imagination. It progressed steadily on its way until in 1934 the designer Pierre Debroutelle designed an inflatable 2 man Kayak which was instantly successful. This led to a number of commissions over the years and the work carried out in inflatable boats caused them to design a load carrier for the U S forces to ship around guns and equipment. This was the start of the inflatable Zodiac boats which could carry large loads safely quickly and cheaply. The boat was so light that it only required a small engine. The success of the boat relied on 2 main ideas, the first was to make the inflatable tubes of a material that was strong and tough with seams that would not part and the second was to compartmentalise the tubes so that any damage to one would leave several others in fine working condition.
The latest design change was to turn the original boat design into swimming pool technology, the principle for a boat was for something that would not let the water in and this was reversed in a swimming pool in that it would not let the water out.
The first pools that were designed were round with large tubes and these are still around today. The material that the pools are made of is called Dyalon and was developed particularly for this market all the joints are robotically joined by a thermo bonding technique, which was developed back in the days of their aeronautical business and was seriously used in that business.
The material needs to be both very tough and very flexible which is difficult to obtain. The tubes these days are more complex than an air tube as now they contain both air and water in separate tubes. This not only provides another strengthening device to the tube but also acts as a water heating device. The tubes get hot from the outside air and the sun and this warms the air in the tube. The air then transfers the heat to the water in the tubes which is then re-circulated back into the pool. This acts as a very effective heating device and is quite remarkable in that it is free heat. The present day pools have advanced to oval shapes, oblongs and even sunk in the ground pools.
